Hibiscus Health Benefits
Only the fleshy calyxes are used for hibiscus tea. These are dried and then boiled. Hibiscus is considered to be of great importance, especially in folk medicine. The calyxes contain various fruit acids, which can support various metabolic processes in the body. They also contain mucilage, which can provide relief from gastrointestinal irritation and other problems with mucous membranes.
Hibiscus is full of pectins, which can regulate blood cholesterol levels, as well as antioxidants and vitamin C. One study has shown that two cups of hibiscus tea can positively affect cholesterol levels by raising "good" HDL cholesterol and lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol. In addition, hibiscus is also said to have antibacterial properties. Here, the vitamin C and some of the secondary plant compounds can support the body against colds.
